Electronic Targets A First For WA

today 18, January 2020

The Rhein Donau Pistol Club recently became the first pistol club in WA to install electronic targets. They have eight 10m air targets, sharing the cost with the air rifle club which also uses the range.

These are second generation electronic targets. Unlike the Sius Ascor system used at the Sydney international shooting centre, these don’t need a roll of paper, there is no wiring between the target and the shooting bench, and you don’t need an on-site IT guru to keep them running. Each shooter brings their own phone, laptop or tablet. On arrival the shooter connects to the wireless server, opens a browser window and enters a URL corresponding to the bay they are in. The application pops up with no software installation required. The target appears on the screen with the shot locations and decimal scores.

This was a necessary move for Rhein Donau because the room is shared with other clubs so they previously had to wind up the strings and take the benches away after every shoot. It doesn’t come cheap though – about $5000 per target. WAPA provided a loan to the club covering part of the cost. The targets have proved to be quite popular and they are using them twice a week, in addition to the rifle club’s use.
